How Much Does a Plastic Extrusion Die Cost in China?

Huangshi Mold Hub Editorial Team · Published and source-reviewed

A plastic extrusion die made in China has no reliable universal price in 2026. The useful comparison is the cost of an accepted tooling package for your drawing and compound: die, calibrators, trials, inspection and agreed support. Profile complexity, width, steel and surface treatment, calibration requirements and development work all affect the quote. Ask makers to price the same scope before comparing totals.

Extrusion Die Cost Breakdown: Where Your Money Goes

“One set of tooling” can mean different things. A die shapes the melt; downstream equipment sizes, cools and handles the profile. The British Plastics Federation’s extrusion overview describes this sequence. A quotation for a die alone cannot be compared directly with a package that includes calibrators and downstream machinery.

Use the following quote-comparison table. Percentages are deliberately omitted: a component’s share changes with the profile and supply boundary, and we have no supplier-confirmed 2026 cost-share dataset.

Cost componentPrice to requestScope question
Die body, flow plates and exit toolingSeparate amount or identified inclusionHow many melt streams and profile lanes?
Calibration toolingSeparate amount and quantityWhich dry calibrators, sizing units and connections are included?
Calibration table and tanksSeparate equipment amount, if suppliedAre these new machines, tooling for your existing table, or excluded?
Steel and heat treatmentGrade and treatment included in each componentAre certificates and treatment records supplied?
Surface treatmentIncluded amount or optionWhich surfaces, process and inspection criteria?
Trials and correctionsIncluded runs and additional-run pricingWho provides compound, samples and measurement reports?

Require a drawing revision and quote validity date. If a vendor bundles steel, machining and treatment into the die price, record that inclusion instead of adding the same cost twice.

5 Factors That Drive Extrusion Die Prices

  1. Profile complexity. Hollow chambers, thin ribs and uneven wall sections create different design and inspection demands from a simple solid strip. Send the complete section, including mating parts and critical fit dimensions.
  2. Die width and output arrangement. Identify the finished width, number of profile lanes, output target and extruder connection. “Multi-cavity” wording alone does not establish the actual layout.
  3. Steel and surface specification. A grade name does not describe the whole tooling package. Identify the melt-contact components, inserts and supports separately. Use the steel selection guide to distinguish wear protection from corrosion protection.
  4. Calibration and cooling scope. Ask the maker to justify the number of calibrators and the proposed downstream arrangement for your line. Tooling compatible with an existing table has a different supply scope from an entire new table.
  5. Development and acceptance work. Agree the trial compound, measurable acceptance criteria and correction responsibilities. A low opening quote is difficult to assess if every subsequent adjustment has an undefined price.

PVC vs WPC Tooling: Why WPC May Cost More

A WPC tooling set may require different flow design, wear provisions and downstream arrangements. That does not prove every WPC die costs more than every PVC die. Compare equally complex profiles with the actual compound and line requirements stated.

Ask the supplier which filler and contamination risks justify its wear specification, which inserts can be replaced, and which experience supports the recommendation. WPC is a composite description, not one fixed resin recipe; the US Forest Service’s wood-thermoplastic reference provides material background. A PVC-based WPC also needs assessment of PVC-related processing risks.

Hidden Costs US Buyers Forget

Include sample shipping, spare inserts, heaters and sensors, adapters, cleaning instructions and replacement drawings in the comparison. Establish who pays when a trial fails the agreed criteria and who pays when you change the profile after manufacture starts.

For a US destination, request a landed-cost estimate from your broker using the actual product classification, origin, value and shipment terms. Do not apply a generic tariff percentage from an unrelated mold listing. Also ask what remote commissioning includes, when an on-site visit is available, and how travel costs are approved.

An illustrative budgeting calculation, not a supplier quote: tooling at $12,000 plus $1,500 for freight and destination handling and $1,000 for installation support gives $14,500 before any applicable duty or tax. Over an assumed 100,000 accepted meters, that is $0.145 per meter in allocated initial cost. Replace every input with your own offers and expected accepted output; resin, labor, utilities, scrap and maintenance remain additional costs.

How to Request an Accurate Quote Within 48 Hours

Treat 48 hours as a requested response window, not a guaranteed quotation deadline. A maker may need further technical review. Send:

  • A dimensioned CAD or PDF section with revision number and mating requirements.
  • The resin or compound grade, filler information, intended surface and color.
  • Your extruder model, adapter information and downstream equipment details.
  • Target output, planned annual volume and initial order schedule.
  • Critical tolerances, inspection method and sample-acceptance conditions.
  • Destination, required supply scope and commissioning expectations.

Start with the catalogued capabilities of Zhongjie, Kunsheng and Hongxing. These are directory profiles, not a guarantee that a maker accepts your project. Apply the 12-point supplier checklist before paying a deposit, then prepare an RFQ with the same requirements for every shortlisted maker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can Chinese extrusion dies cost less than European ones?

Labor, manufacturing overhead, local subcontracting and service scope can affect quoted prices. Country alone does not establish a price or quality advantage. Compare the same drawing, steel specification, acceptance conditions and after-sales scope.

How long does an extrusion die last?

There is no reliable universal life in meters. Compound abrasiveness, corrosion exposure, output, cleaning and repair history matter. Ask for comparable application records and define the wear limits that trigger refurbishment.

Should I pay for the T1 trial separately?

Use the written quotation. Specify the included trial runs, material quantity, inspection report and responsibility for corrections. Distinguish supplier corrections from buyer changes to the drawing or compound.

Can one die run both PVC and WPC?

Only if the maker validates the actual compounds, flow behavior and downstream equipment. WPC may itself use a PVC matrix. Matching the profile outline does not establish that a tooling set can run both formulations.
